The origins of Chartwell lay with the family of Thomas Clarkin who farmed 40 acres of land North of Clarkin Road. His family subdivided the land selling some to the government for schools in the area and the rest for housing developments. From the 1950’s the area developed rapidly. When Chartwell Square (Now Westfield Shopping Centre) was added in 1970 the area grew at an even faster pace. Fairfield College opened in 1961 providing local high schooling for families in the area.

Notable Landmarks

One of Hamilton citys largest residential dwelling sales, ($2.93 million) was in the cluster of homes on River Road alongside the river between Comries Road and Glen Lynne Avenue. Westfield Shopping Centre was originally built in 1970 and has expanded to over 80 specialty retailers. Porritt Stadium is named after the legendary 100m Olympic sprinter & Governor-General Lord Arther Porritt. Famous athletes compete at this stadium.

Real Estate & Design

Brick and tile homes with pitched roofs built during the 1970’s dominate the real estate in Chartwell. These range from the modest three bedroom homes to the more elaborate four bedroom, two living, basement garaging homes which in some cases include such modern features as ensuites. More elaborate homes of a later era hug the cliff tops of the river overlooking the St Andrews golf club. To the north the exclusive area of Harrowfield was established in the early 1990’s. Large executive homes have been built in this area. On the eastern boundary the small area of Heritage Park features modern houses of the late 1990’s.

Almost 3000 homes make up this area with a population of some 8163 residents.


Convenience shopping in handy smaller centres such as Queenwood Ave and Crosby Road also feature some novelty apparel and gift shops. However, the Westfield Shopping Centre on Hukanui road has over 80 shops undercover. Many of the national chain specialty shops can be found here. Across the road Lyndon Court houses some bulk retailers while next door the Chartwell professional suites offer a dentist, an optometrist and other medical specialists.

Restaurants & Cafes

En Q can be found on Queenwood Ave. Intimate casual dining with a traditional flavour can be enjoyed in the evenings. Zinc Cafe is an ideal spot to enjoy lunch with friends in pavement style dining in the same Queenwood shopping strip, while Smith and McKenzie Chophouse opposite Westfield Shopping Centre is fast becoming a favourite for family dining. Naturally Westfield has a wide range of fast food and cafes in its food court.

Sports & Fitness

Athletes can enjoy the use of Porritt Stadium or if something more competitive is required join the Lodge Sponsored Frankton Athletic and Harrier Club, which uses Porritt Stadium as its base. Configure Express the womens only gym in Westfield Shopping Centre may also appeal, or try swimming at the Mayo centre in Queenwood.

Schools & Education

Bankwood and Hukanui primary schools are in the area while Fairfield Intermediate and Farifield College are the state schools. St Pauls Collegiate on Hukanui Road is an Anglican private school. Distance from CBD

Approximately 6 km from the CBD. Chartwell is served by buses from the CBD at 30 minute intervals (on week days). A fare from the CBD to Westfield will cost about $2.60

Key Attractions

Shopping at Westfield is popular because of the variety of outlets. For something more leisurely a picnic at Swarbrick Landing watching the rowers go through their paces may appeal. The library opposite the Westfield Mall is another popular facility.
