Packing Materials You Need to Protect Your Valuables While Moving

Packing is one of the hardest parts of moving out. It is very time-consuming and labor-intensive and it requires some skills. But even if you aren't very dexterous, you can still protect your breakables from chipping or damaging by using appropriate packing materials. When it comes to keeping your valuables safe during transport, there are a few key packing materials that you should stock up with. Here they are.

Magic Marker

If you are moving, you need to make sure you know where your fragile items are. With all the hassle that relocating creates, you may forget where you put them. In this case, marking the boxes with a magic marker will help you to easily differentiate your breakables from the rest of the items. So don't forget to include a magic marker in the supplies and materials you need to pack your belongings before moving.

Packing Paper

You are going to need lots of paper to pack your items. It is essential when it comes to packing breakables and other valuables. You can use newsprint or tissue paper to wrap up your dishes, glasses, mugs, plates and bowls. In addition, put newspaper between your items when you place them in boxes so they don't shift. If you create more padding, they won't break or chip. Using actual newspaper for packing is risky, as it may stain your items. For this reason, you'd better stick with blank, clean newsprint. However, when it comes to filling in gaps, it's okay to use newspaper.

Cardboard Dividers

Fragile items need room to breathe. You can't just toss them in a storage container and move them to another location. They should be wrapped in paper in the first place. Still, it's best to use cardboard dividers for maximum protection. That way, your breakables will not rub together during transport, which will keep them from chipping or breaking. Cardboard dividers are essential when it comes to packing fragile items, especially glassware.

And surprise, surprise! You don't have to buy cardboard dividers if you don't want to. Head to your local liquor or grocery store and ask them to give away a few.

Protective Padding

If you are not fully acquainted with the art of packing, you should know that it is not as difficult as it seems and not as simple as you think. Everything should be well thought out. Just like we mentioned earlier, you can't simply stash your valuables in boxes and relocate them. If they can move freely around inside the container, they may get damaged.

Fill in all the space with protective padding. Use Polystyrene filler or bubble wrap. (Bubble wrap can also serve a great purpose for your glasses and bowls. Wrap them in bubble wrap before you move and they will be save throughout the trip.) Don't worry if you don't have any of these at hand. Just use anything you can find around the home, such as pillows, towels, blankets and comforters. It will keep your valuables from shifting and breaking.

It goes without saying that the boxes you use should be big enough to hold your possessions. Mind you that your items can still break in a large box if they are not packed properly or if the container is overloaded. When it comes to packing valuables, you want to use boxes that were meant for breakables.

It also makes sense to pack all your electronics in the boxes they came in originally to prevent damage or breakage. Use dish-packing containers for your plates and bowls. Opt for cardboard dividers for your glassware.

Paper, cardboard dividers, protective padding, boxes and magic marker is all you need to keep your fragile items safe during transport. Make sure to get some before you start packing.
